Spring Cleaning, May 10th
"We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect."

Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort is one of seven Powdr Corp mountain resorts.
Powdr Corp recently announced that it will offset 100 percent of the grid supplied electricity consumed at its seven ski and snowboard resorts and one tubing park through the purchase of renewable energy credits beginning in June 2008. Powdr Corp’s purchase of nearly 50 million kWh of renewable energy credits (RECs) is the second largest among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) partners in the travel and leisure category.
“We are passionate about the snowsports industry and the quality of life it provides to our families, team members and guests,” said Brent Giles, director of environmental affairs for Powdr Corp. “Our commitment to offset 100 percent of our resorts’ power from renewable energy sources is another step in the right direction to sustain our mountain lifestyle for years to come.”
The National Wildlife Federation recently released this Global Warming Myth Buster. Here are some highlights:
* "The current warming cycle is natural; the earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years."
What we are experiencing today is not natural. It is true that the earth goes through long cycles of warm and cold periods due to small variations in the planet's tilt and rotation. But science tells us that the climate change we are experiencing does not fit the planetary cycle. We are beyond anything the planetary cycle would account for.
* "A temperature rise of 1 degree is inconsequential, and the predicted rise of 2-3 degrees is barely anything."
Actually 1.7 degree of average temperature increase is already causing the sea level to rise and ecosystems to shift. And, temperatures are rising faster at the poles, with more severe consequences such as the rapid melting of polar ice caps. A degree or two more will only make impacts worse.
* "The warming we have seen is due mostly to the sun."
For the last 30 years, while the earth's temperature has been rapidly rising, the sun has shown no trend of increased solar radiation. There simply isn't any reliable study showing the sun's intensity has increased, causing the climate to warm.
